TTC ordered to call out all streetcar, bus stops

Toronto Transit Commission drivers must start announcing all bus and streetcar stops within 30 days, the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario ruled yesterday.The decision, which the TTC will not appeal, is a second victory for blind Toronto lawyer David Lepofsky, who, two years ago, obtained a similar ruling that required the TTC to announce subway stops.

Toronto is the seventh most expensive city in North America for monthly office parking, according to a new survey. The annual Colliers International report on parking rates found little change in rankings of different cities, although prices rose more in Canadian cities - especially smaller centres like Edmonton and Victoria - than they did south of the border.

A Toronto public health inspector has been charged with corruption and breach of trust.Police say that during scheduled health inspections at a licensed bar and cafe from Monday to Wednesday of this week, the 42-year-old allegedly offered to accept money from the establishment in exchange for a lenient inspection, according to a news release issued by police.

When Mike Harris's Ontario government downloaded responsibility for social services onto municipalities a decade ago, provincial Liberal leader Dalton McGuinty planted himself firmly in the corner of cities. The province, Mr. McGuinty charged, was forcing municipal governments either to make drastic cutbacks or to impose untenable boosts to property-tax rates. Third man charged in shooting of 11-year-old

Police have made another arrest in connection to an alleged rival gang shootout that claimed the life of 11-year-old Ephraim Brown.Sheldon Gladstone Evans, 22, of Toronto, was arrested yesterday by the Toronto police guns and gangs task force. He is charged with failure to comply with recognizance. Police allege Mr. Evans was present at a Sheppard Avenue birthday party early Sunday where a shootout between rival gangs broke out. Ephraim was killed when he was caught in the crossfire. After the shootout, investigators say, Mr. Evans fled the scene.
