Toronto's history, stashed in the closet

Mea culpa. Two decades ago, when I wrote a Fodor's travel guide to Toronto, I tried to pump up the prose by telling the story of the first white man in the area. Coureur de bois Etienne Brule, scout for Samuel de Champlain, lived among the Huron (so my text assured readers) until, in 1633, his drinking and womanizing so offended them that they killed and ate him. Sex, death and cannibalism - I hoped all this would lure people into reading about Toronto.

The Toronto real estate market continued to sizzle through the mid-summer, setting a record high for the number of sales in July.The Toronto Real Estate Board said yesterday there were 8,912 sales in July, a 26-per-cent increase over the same period last year.

Suddenly everybody is shouting for city hall to clean up its act, just like David Miller said four years ago - and Torontonians gave him the mandate to do just that. The difference is that Mr. Miller had ample evidence of scandal to support his crusade for ''a clean city'' in 2003. By contrast, his would-be successors today have nothing on Miller and his team.
