Accused in officer's dragging death now faces first-degree murder

A charge of manslaughter stemming from the dragging death of an undercover York Regional Police officer was upgraded to first-degree murder yesterday.A 19-year-old Toronto man was initially charged with manslaughter last week after Constable Robert Plunkett was killed in the line of duty while investigating an airbag-theft ring. (A charge of manslaughter is laid when police cannot determine whether an accused intentionally caused death.) A second Toronto man faces multiple charges, including theft and possession of stolen property.

Fire strikes prestigious golf course

Golfer Shawn McCann tees off on the 14th hole at the Oakville Executive Golf Course yesterday, the burned-out clubhouse behind him. The fire department was called to the course at 2:30 a.m., but by the time they arrived the clubhouse was engulfed in flames. Halton police have said the fire was deliberately set. There were no injuries, but damage is estimated at $500,000.

Unexplained back-to-back blackouts strike East York

Toronto Hydro workers aren't sure what caused two major power outages in East York within less than 24 hours, but one power-grid expert reached yesterday blamed the problem on a combination of population growth and aging infrastructure.

Toronto Police say they are preparing to release descriptions of two people alleged to have committed the 50th homicide of the year.Detective Sergeant Bill Vieira said yesterday that police are focusing on two men who were spotted running north onto Gerrard Street East from the Regent Park residential building Saturday afternoon.
