Needs a transfer

Monday 13 August 2007
Although Michael Warren's analysis of the failings of Toronto's transit system (Why, And How, We Should Rebuild The TTC, online, Aug. 10) are both timely and perceptive, he repeats an oft-cited canard: that the city, in lobbying for increased funding of its transit system, is asking for the tax dollars of people who don't live there. In fact, Toronto is asking to slightly reduce the disparity between what its citizens pay in taxes and what they receive in services - to send marginally less money to the rest of Ontario and Canada. According to repeated studies by a diverse set of organizations, that disparity is in the billions every year. (Globe Insider subscribers only)

Spot the difference

Monday 13 August 2007
It seems like a fairly basic equation. Take one city park, add grass seed, water generously. Result: soft islands of green amid the concrete, ideal for sports, hanging out or just plain resting the eyes. For many Torontonians trapped downtown during sweat-bath season, parks are a crucial sanctuary. Why then should one city-maintained park wear its emerald carpet throughout the summer, with only the occasional bald spot, while another burns up from end to end, becoming a dusty yellow mat the texture of straw by early July?

Diners' dilemma: A decent lake view

Monday 13 August 2007
When eager, helpless diners shuttle to the city and request a restaurant recommendation, how many times have you suggested an eatery on the water? I'll answer first. Zero.If the greening of Toronto's waterfront is the most politicized where-land-meets-lake issue, the dining along the waterfront should be the dark-horse concern en route to all citizen hearts (our stomachs). Isosceles slices and tepid cart-dogs are the standard shoreline fare, followed closely by thick cardiac fries from the chippy van. Save for the occasional Harbourfront festival offering ethnic delights, nothing reputable comes to mind.
