Two men involved in a stabbing incident in downtown Toronto last week may have responded to a group of panhandlers' request for money with profanity, exacerbating a situation that led to a 32-year-old tourist being stabbed to death, The Globe and Mail has learned.

Animal-rescue worker not co-operating, OSPCA says

A Toronto Humane Society investigator who last month rescued a Rottweiler from a sweltering car - and handcuffed its owner to the car door - failed to file the requisite report, the chief inspector for the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said yesterday, explaining his decision to put the investigator's status on hold pending a review of the incident. Citing ''a lack of co-operation'' by Tre Smith, OSPCA inspector Hugh Coghill said he has still not seen the report.

Suspected thief fires shot from police officer's gun

A Toronto man approached a plainclothes officer yesterday, lunged for his holstered gun and managed to fire a shot, police say.The bullet hit the ground and nobody was injured, said Staff Sergeant Al Coulter.
