Premier McGuinty, restraint is calling

Monday 20 August 2007
It's August, and in Ontario the Premier is staging a roadshow version of Promises, Promises. Not a day has passed this summer that Liberal Premier Dalton McGuinty or one of his ministers hasn't found a reason to announce how much money they are diverting from one group of taxpayers to another: $11.5-billion (over 12 years) for new rapid-transit projects, $650-million for the automotive sector (replacing a $500-million program) to lure investment in green technology, an extra $182-million next year for school boards (on top of an additional $781-million promised in March), $21.5-million (over five years) to tackle high-risk offenders, $30-million to clean up Hamilton Harbour, $2-million for a police surveillance plane to watch for dangerous drivers - on it goes. Monday 20 August 2007
An 18-year-old motorist driving near Highway 400 north of Toronto Thursday afternoon went through a radar trap that clocked him travelling almost 100 kilometres an hour above the posted speed limit, police said. If convicted, he could lose his driver's licence and face more than $1,200 in fines. Under legislation that takes effect Sept. 30, Ontario police will be able to automatically suspend licences and seize the cars of drivers caught travelling 50 km/h or more above the speed limit.

NDP MPPs give Miller the cold shoulder

Monday 20 August 2007
You would think the provincial New Democrats would stand up for their city hall brothers and sisters as Toronto copes with its budget crisis, and Mayor David Miller - no longer, admittedly, a card-carrying member - orders cuts to city services to make up for the defeat of his controversial tax plan. But no.
