The Toronto police Emergency Task Force was dispatched on the weekend after a suspected pipe bomb was found on the front porch of a North York home. According to police, officers from the explosives disposal unit went to the house and ''rendered safe a suspicious package'' that had been located by the homeowner, Toronto lawyer Terrence Reiber.

The aluminum baseball bat allegedly used to bludgeon the mistress of a former Toronto policeman normally served as a tool of household protection, his murder trial heard yesterday. The evidence came from Andrew Wills, 19, the oldest of Richard Wills's three teenaged children and the first defence witness.

Police raid nets more than 40,000 pirated DVDs

Investigators penetrated a sophisticated DVD pirating ring, seizing more than 40,000 bootleg movies and arresting 25 people.For several months, officers from Peel and Toronto police investigated the sale and distribution of pirated DVDs within the Greater Toronto Area. On Sunday, they raided several addresses in Brampton, Mississauga and Toronto, laying more than 70 charges.

Toronto woman dies after glider crashes

A Toronto woman is dead after the glider she was piloting crashed into a field at the SOSA Gliding Club in Rockton, half an hour northwest of Hamilton.Police were called to the club, next to the African Lion Safari, around 3:40 p.m. Saturday.

Premier McGuinty, restraint is calling

It's August, and in Ontario the Premier is staging a roadshow version of Promises, Promises. Not a day has passed this summer that Liberal Premier Dalton McGuinty or one of his ministers hasn't found a reason to announce how much money they are diverting from one group of taxpayers to another: $11.5-billion (over 12 years) for new rapid-transit projects, $650-million for the automotive sector (replacing a $500-million program) to lure investment in green technology, an extra $182-million next year for school boards (on top of an additional $781-million promised in March), $21.5-million (over five years) to tackle high-risk offenders, $30-million to clean up Hamilton Harbour, $2-million for a police surveillance plane to watch for dangerous drivers - on it goes.
