Sports television in the Ontario market changed radically yesterday with confirmation that Rogers Sportsnet and Leafs TV are now the principal carriers of Toronto Maple Leafs telecasts.Sportsnet, by signing an eight-year rights agreement with owner Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment, becomes the dominant carrier of regional games, replacing TSN.

Dalton McGuinty and John Tory had competing messages and styles when they succumbed yesterday to the political attractions of the first day of school.Mr. McGuinty, the Liberal Leader looking for re-election, visited an elementary school in this city west of Toronto, goofed around with the kids at recess and proclaimed that his government has been nothing but good news for students, teachers, parents and educational administrators. Mr. Tory stopped at a school in nearby Mississauga, but didn't go inside to meet the children, using a podium on the curb to condemn the government for sweeping the problems of schools under the rug. Crown withdraws charges against veteran Hamilton officer

A veteran Hamilton-Wentworth police officer charged with fabricating evidence was exonerated yesterday when the Crown conceded that a ''large body of evidence'' pointed straight toward her innocence.''It was devastating,'' Detective Sergeant Helena Russell said moments afterward. ''I've been waiting a long time for this. I look forward to going back to the job I love.''

It is ''no dice'' for a casino in Toronto, an idea firmly squashed yesterday by both Mayor David Miller and Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty.At city hall, several councillors urged the mayor-controlled executive committee to look into the feasibility of a Toronto-owned gambling operation, in part to raise revenue.

Nicole Kish, the young woman charged with second-degree murder in the stabbing death of a St. Catharines man in Toronto last month, has been granted bail.The 21-year-old was the only Canadian charged in connection with a confrontation in which 32-year-old Ross Hammond was killed. The death made headlines around the country, in large part because Ms. Kish and her co-accused were described as aggressive panhandlers. Three Americans were also charged. The four were originally charged with aggravated assault, but the charges against Ms. Kish were upgraded in mid-August.

A 50-year-old Toronto woman is dead after a kayaking accident in Perth Saturday morning. Police say the woman was kayaking on the Tay River when her craft flipped and became lodged under a tree. The woman's name has not yet been released.
