Family convinced missing woman still alive

The family of a young Toronto woman who disappeared into the wilderness last month believes she is still alive and that someone knows what happened to her.''Someone out there knows something,'' said Karen Caguicla, whose niece Christina Calayca, 20, was last seen in Rainbow Falls Provincial Park on Aug. 6. ''Responsible people just do not vanish without a trace.''

John Barber (Tory's Proposal A Call To Arms For Secular Humanism - Sept. 6) is correct when he invokes the name of Egerton Ryerson as a reformer who defended ''public education as the essential common ground of a divided, pluralistic society.'' However, what Mr. Barber fails to mention is that Ryerson, like his Tory arch-nemesis John Strachan, the Anglican bishop of Toronto, was also unwavering in his belief that a far greater threat to the political and social stability of early 19th-century Upper Canada was radical secularism, that is, atheism. Majority of Ontarians willing to pay more taxes for schools, survey says

The majority of Ontarians support increased funding for public schools, and many are prepared to shoulder a higher tax burden, according to a new opinion survey. The poll, which was developed by researchers at the University of Toronto's Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, found 73 per cent of respondents supported higher spending on schools; 60 per cent said they were willing to pay more taxes for education.

Onley to focus on computer literacy for natives

David Onley, Ontario's first disabled representative of the Queen, vowed to launch a computer literacy program for native children yesterday as he officially took up his viceregal duties.The veteran Toronto broadcaster was sworn in as the province's 28th Lieutenant-Governor. Rather than embark on a new cause as is traditional, Mr. Onley said he will continue with the work of his predecessor, James Bartleman, who devoted much of his time to instilling a love of books in native children.
