Terrorism case moves directly to trial

The federal Crown has abruptly halted a preliminary hearing against 14 Toronto-area terrorism suspects in favour of going directly to trial, a move that defence lawyers say is a clear attempt to prop up a faltering case and prevent them from fully cross-examining a key government witness.

City rolls out online plan to address bike theft

Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair will unveil a new online bicycle registration system today, in an effort to combat complaints from cyclists about rampant bike theft.A police source, citing criticism from some that police are doing too little to track down the more than 4,000 bikes reported stolen each year, said moving to a Web-based system should significantly boost the number of people who take the time to register their bike.

Man dies as truck slams into vehicles

A crash yesterday during the morning rush hour in Toronto caused the northbound collector lanes of Highway 427 to be closed near Burnhamthorpe Ave. until about 5 p.m. Police said the truck driver was unable to stop in time and struck three vans and an SUV. A man was crushed to death in one of the vans.
