When Grace Van Berkum woke up yesterday, she didn't expect to pull on a pair of shorts and a tank top for her early-morning jog. By midafternoon, the 34-year-old Torontonian found herself drawn out into the scorching heat again, this time armed with a pair of sunglasses and a bottle of water, for a walk with her father and the family dog.

Toronto women in poor neighbourhoods more likely to have preterm births, study says

There is a direct relationship between a neighbourhood's income level and the risks of preterm births and other childbirth problems, a Statistics Canada study has found.Researchers examined more than 143,000 live births in Toronto between April, 1996, and March, 2001. Toronto neighbourhoods were divided into five groups based on the proportion of their population below Statistics Canada's low-income cut-off, which measures a family's ability to buy the basics such as food and clothing.

Fire marshal investigating two church blazes

The Ontario Fire Marshal is investigating fires that destroyed two churches early yesterday in the small community of Cannington, northeast of Toronto.Residents are expressing outrage at a series of blazes in a six-block radius, which appear to have been ignited around 4 a.m. Durham police say a number of vehicles and neighbouring restaurants were also damaged.

And now, according to some industry observers, it's positioning itself to become the dominant player in supplying non-text books to school libraries in Ontario and possibly the rest of the country.

Toronto police said yesterday they want to speak to a man who made an anonymous phone call Saturday night, telling them where to find a body.Police say an unidentified man called 911 operators around 11 p.m. and directed police to go to an apartment on the 12th floor of a building at 200 Woolner Ave. near Jane Street and St. Clair Avenue West.
