Brain surgery patient goes missing in Mississauga

Police in Mississauga are looking for a hospital patient who wandered away from his room after undergoing brain surgery.Cornelius DeHooge, 52, walked away from the Trillium Health Centre yesterday afternoon. The Collingwood, Ont., native recently underwent brain surgery, which doctors say has led to some erratic behaviour, police said. He was last seen near Hurontario Street and Queensway West about 2 p.m.

With the delightful mirage of an easily manipulated minority at Queen's Park melting before his eyes, Mayor David Miller tersely refused to name his favourites for the last time yesterday. That's understandable. Errant endorsements have caused him unnecessary trouble in the past. But there was one provincial leader who deserved better, the one to whom the Toronto mayor remains most indebted as he struggles to raise new taxes and coax the re-empowered majority into sharing its wealth: Mike Harris. There is a direct relationship between a neighbourhood's income level and the risks of preterm births and other childbirth problems, a Statistics Canada study has found.Researchers examined more than 143,000 live births in Toronto between April, 1996, and March, 2001. Toronto neighbourhoods were divided into five groups based on the proportion of their population below Statistics Canada's low-income cut-off, which measures a family's ability to buy the basics such as food and clothing.
