Two Ontario judges rise to Court of Appeal

Two prominent Superior Court of Ontario judges - Madam Justice Gloria Epstein and Mr. Justice David Watt - were elevated to the Ontario Court of Appeal yesterday. Federal Justice Minister Rob Nicholson also announced that Ontario Superior Court Judge Edward Then has been appointed regional senior judge for the Toronto region.

Man pulled from lake near island airport

The fully clothed body of a man was pulled from Lake Ontario early yesterday, police said. An employee at the Toronto City Centre Airport had gone outside for a cigarette break shortly after 4 a.m. when he heard screams for help and splashing in the water, Sergeant Leo Parwicki of the Toronto police marine unit said.

Sometimes, when City Hall says it's spending money because of time constraints, it really means it.The City of Toronto recently cited ''time constraints'' as the reason for awarding Clifford Restoration a contract to restore the roof, windows and masonry of the R.C. Harris Water Treatment Plant without searching for a competitive bid. The contract was worth about a quarter of a million dollars, contributing to the $8-million already spent by the city for a long-term restoration plan.
