Thirty-five years ago, Toronto astronomer Tom Bolton made a discovery that rocked the scientific world: He proved the existence of black holes.A few leading astrophysicists had predicted that so-called ''black holes'' could be created when huge stars die and implode under their own massive weight. According to the far-out theories, these super-dense objects would exert such a powerful gravitational pull that not even light could escape their grasp. Essentially, black holes would be invisible - and that would make it extremely difficult to find one.

Accused officer resigns

The lead officer of the Toronto police drug squad that is accused of criminal corruption has resigned from the force, according to a police source. John Schertzer, who was a staff sergeant, is currently awaiting a criminal trial set to begin in January, along with five constables of the once elite police unit.

Library branches to reopen on Sundays

Sunday hours will resume Oct. 28 at 16 Toronto Public Library branches - recent casualties of a cost-cutting push by the city - the library board decided unanimously last night.And, with an eye to city council's crucial vote next Monday on new taxes, the board also ''strongly'' urged councillors to approve new revenues to invest in the 99-branch system. The board's reversal means that all 27 branches that usually offer Sunday service will be open.
