Pedestrian-friendly traffic scheme to be tested

With an aim to making Toronto more friendly to pedestrians, four major downtown intersections will become testing grounds as so-called pedestrian scrambles, possibly as early as next spring.A pedestrian scramble, common in other cities, changes the cycle of traffic lights at an intersection to stop cars in all directions at once, allowing pedestrians to cross in all directions, including diagonally. Traffic engineers say scrambles reduce the danger of turning cars hitting crossing pedestrians.

Attempted murder charges laid in knife attacks

A 24-year-old man is facing several charges, including attempted murder, after people were allegedly stabbed at random in downtown Toronto on Tuesday. Three victims were treated in hospital and released. A fourth person came forward with a similar story, but police have not laid charges in that incident.
