Lawyer criticizes judge's 'poisonous' remarks

Sunday 28 October 2007
An outspoken Ontario Court of Appeal judge, Mr. Justice Michael Moldaver, was accused yesterday of using poisonous terminology in a personal campaign to ''prune the Charter with an axe.''Prominent Toronto defence lawyer William Trudell levelled the accusation during a speech to about 200 criminal lawyers who have been quietly stewing since Judge Moldaver publicly disparaged the defence bar in two speeches of his own for wasting time and court resources with needless legal motions.

Condo towers or academe powers?

Sunday 28 October 2007
When the University of Toronto's faculty of law recently unveiled designs for a major expansion, some alumni noticed an intriguing detail in one of the three plans. The law school, situated on Queen's Park Crescent, needs new office, library and teaching space. In one model, a jagged addition envelopes the law school's current digs as well as the faculty of music, directly to the north. ''Then,'' according to Saucier and Perrotte's write-up, ''turning toward the current planetarium site, it ends poetically, suggesting an elegant form to what may in the future become part of the [Royal Ontario Museum] expansion.''

Sunday 28 October 2007
How does your garden grow? Well, if you are a Pierre Trudeau fan, the answer to that question might be: not well.Trudeau Park, a permanent memorial to the late prime minister, was approved for development by Toronto City Council in 2001. It's time to pay the piper, Toronto

Sunday 28 October 2007
Contrary to the pain you may be feeling in your pocket, Toronto actually became a bit of a bargain in 2007. Last year, Canada's most expensive metropolis was the 47th-costliest city on the planet in which to live, according to the Mercer Human Resources' annual cost-of-living survey. By the middle of this year, though, T.O. had tumbled in world rankings, coming up for duty at No. 82. That may earn envious glances from people trying to make ends meet in the world's most expensive locales - Moscow, London, Seoul and Tokyo.

The moral of the downtown success story: It's no accident

Sunday 28 October 2007
The success of downtown Toronto is so obvious today as to seem unremarkable. It certainly isn't news: Citizens interested in the latest documentary evidence, the results of the city's ''Living Downtown'' survey, will have to dig deep into the entrails of the planning committee agenda to find it. But what they will discover there, in a report as solid and modest as the man responsible for it (Toronto chief planner Ted Tyndorf) is in fact a triumphant affirmation of far-sighted urban planning.
